Local SEO in Louisiana: A Practical Guide for Small Business

Local SEOSmall BusinessLouisiana

When someone in Covington searches "plumber near me" or someone in New Orleans searches "family lawyer metairie," Google decides in an instant which businesses to show. Local SEO is the work of making sure yours is one of them. The good news: most of your competitors are doing this badly or not at all, so a few hours of honest effort can put you ahead. Here is the practical version, written for a busy Louisiana business owner, not a marketer.

Start with your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears in Google Maps and in the box of local results at the top of the search page. For many local searches, that box gets more clicks than the regular results below it. This is the single highest-value thing you control for free.

Do this:

  • Claim and verify your profile at google.com/business if you have not already.
  • Fill out every field. Categories, services, hours, service area, description, photos. An incomplete profile signals an inactive business.
  • Choose your primary category carefully. "Roofing contractor" and "General contractor" are different races. Pick the one that matches what you most want to be found for.
  • Add real photos. Your storefront, your team, your work. Stock photos help nobody.
  • Keep hours current, especially around holidays, Mardi Gras closures, and storm days. Wrong hours cost you trust and customers in the same moment.

Reviews: ask, then answer

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals, and they are what customers read before they call you. You do not need hundreds. You need a steady flow of genuine ones.

  • Ask at the moment of satisfaction: when the job wraps up, when the meal ends well, when the case closes. A short text with a direct review link works better than "find us on Google."
  • Reply to every review, good and bad. A calm, professional reply to a bad review often does more for you than five-star praise, because future customers see how you handle problems.
  • Never buy reviews or write your own. Google catches this, and so do your neighbors.

Use the words your customers actually type

Think about how people really search. Nobody types "premier culinary establishment." They type "seafood restaurant mandeville" or "ac repair slidell." Your website should use those plain phrases in the places that matter: page titles, headings, and naturally within the text.

A quick exercise: write down your five main services and the five towns or areas you serve. Those combinations, like "roof repair Hammond" or "estate planning attorney Covington," are your target phrases. Work them into your site where they genuinely fit. If a sentence sounds robotic when you read it out loud, rewrite it. Google has gotten very good at spotting keyword stuffing, and customers spot it even faster.

Keep your NAP consistent everywhere

NAP stands for name, address, and phone number. Google cross-checks your business details across your website, your Google profile, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, and dozens of directories. When the details disagree, Google trusts all of them less.

  • Pick one exact format for your business name, address, and phone number.
  • Use it identically everywhere, down to "St." versus "Street."
  • If you have moved or changed numbers, spend an hour hunting down old listings and fixing them. This is tedious and worth it.

Build a page for each location or core service

If you serve Covington, Mandeville, and Slidell, a single homepage cannot rank well for all three. A short, genuinely useful page for each area you serve, or each major service you offer, gives Google a clear answer to "does this business serve this searcher?"

The key word is genuine. A location page should say something true and specific: the neighborhoods you cover, the kinds of jobs you do there, how quickly you can respond. Ten copy-pasted pages with only the town name swapped out will hurt more than help. This is an area where the structure of your website matters, and it is part of what we handle in our web development services.

Make your site fast on a phone

Most local searches happen on a phone, often on a slow connection. If your site takes six seconds to load, a chunk of your visitors are gone before they see your phone number. Speed is also a direct ranking factor for Google.

Quick self-test: open your site on your phone using cellular data, not your office wifi. Count the seconds. Then try to find your phone number and tap it. If either step frustrates you, it is frustrating your customers too. Common culprits are oversized photos, bloated page builders, and plugins piled on over the years. Slow sites are one of the most common problems we fix; you can see examples of what fast looks like in our work.

A simple monthly routine

Local SEO is not a one-time project. Here is a maintenance routine that takes under an hour a month:

  1. Add two or three new photos to your Google Business Profile.
  2. Ask your happiest recent customers for a review, and reply to any new ones.
  3. Check that your hours, phone number, and services are still accurate everywhere.
  4. Add or update one page of genuinely useful content on your site.

FAQ

How long does local SEO take to work? Profile fixes and review momentum can show results within weeks. Ranking improvements from website changes usually take a few months. Anyone promising page one in days is selling something you do not want.

Do I need to pay for Google ads too? Not necessarily. Ads can make sense for competitive terms, but strong local SEO delivers clicks you do not pay for, every month, indefinitely. Get the free foundation right first.

Can I do all of this myself? Most of it, yes, and this guide is meant to help you do exactly that. The technical side, like site speed, page structure, and building out location pages properly, is where a developer earns their keep.
